NSW: Woman trapped by smoke in unit fire

Firefighters have rescued a woman trapped by smoke in a block of units in McMahonsPoint on Sydney's lower north shore.

A Fire Brigade spokesman says crews were called to a fire on the second floor of thefive-storey block in Bay View Street about 5.55am (AEST).

He says smoke had filled the corridors and about 30 people had to be evacuated from the building.

He says one woman was unable to escape her top floor unit and had to be helped downby firefighters who fitted an air mask over her face.

The woman was taken by ambulance to hospital for observation.

The spokesman says crews took about half an hour to extinguish the blaze in the secondfloor unit.

The unit was extensively damaged and several others were smoke-damaged.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
